Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter History

​

In 1924, in the neophyte city of Gary, Indiana, Epsilon Chapter was formed.  It was organized at the home of Grace Smith by National Organizer, Homer Woods.  It was the first Negro Greek letter organization in the City of Gary.  The charter members were Ruby Creswell, Clairbelle Fuller (served as the first Basileus), Clara Murphy(Wimbley), Louise Jefferson McMickens, Nellie Lane, Florida Leeke and Grace Smith.  Transfer members included Jessie Bryant Phillips, Leota Allen Semmes, and Arella McGhee Johnson.

Epsilon chapter hosted the sixth (6th) annual Boule’ in Gary, Indiana on December 26 through December 28, 1930.  The meetings were held at the newly built Roosevelt High School with Grand Basileus Fannie O’Bannon presiding.  The chapter continued holding leadership positions in the 12th administration (1937-1938) board member Clarabell Fuller and in the 16th administration (1944-1946) board member Martha Burnett.

 

As the Country grew and standards of education changed too.  The sorority also changed and grew to distinguish Graduate Chapters and Undergraduate Chapters.

The legacy of leaders that have served our Sorority on the Regional and National level from Alpha Sigma Sigma chapter our own Soror Adah M. Hull served as Undergraduate Campus Advisor from 1974-1978 and served as Central Region’s Syntakes from 1978 to 1982.  Soror Hull continued to serve the Sorority as Grand Grammateus from 1988 to 1998.  Our chapter has also had Regional officers Soror Beatrice Sea held the offices of Central Region Tamiochus,(1980) Rhoer Coordinator, ( 1986), Soror Doris Williams held the position of Central Region Sergeant at Arms and Anti-Grammateus.(1990’s). Soror Dharathula T. “Dolly” Hood-Harris held the position of Central Region Tamiochus (1986-1990/2012-2014) held the positions of Grand Tamiochus (1990-1998) and Grand Grammateus (1998-2002).

Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter for 94 years continues the legacy of service to the Gary community.
